About Us

The Need

Drug and alcohol addiction is an intense problem and an ever-growing epidemic across the country and around the world. Every 4 minutes, someone in the US dies as the result of an overdose or alcohol related cause. The Surgeon General estimates that approximately 10% of the US population suffer from an addiction, with nearly 22 million being untreated. This translates to 1 in 3 families being directly affected by addiction.

History

The seeds of NewDay were first planted in the late 1990’s when Dan Johnson taught through the book of Exodus in his church. As a result, numerous people sought Dan’s help in confronting their addictive habits.  In time, his burden grew for both individuals caught in addiction and their families.
Eventually, NewDay was birthed.

Since its beginning, NewDay has provided counseling to an ever-growing number of individuals and families, become the referral choice of numerous churches, developed a highly effective recovery curriculum and church training curriculum, and published several books.

Values

We value God’s truth because it directs us to genuine freedom (“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32)

We value grace because it motivates us to treat people with dignity and worth (“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:13-14. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16)

We value hope because it inspires us to follow God toward a brighter future (“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10)

Spiritual Formation

As a faith-based organization, we believe that freedom from substance abuse and addiction includes not only therapeutic and medical services, but also the development of a strong spiritual foundation and engagement with a church community.  NewDay holds to beliefs that have characterized evangelical Christianity for many years.

These include the belief that the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God and without error.  We believe in one God Who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God Who became flesh to reveal God to humanity and to give Himself as the sufficient sacrifice for sin.  We believe that all people were created in the image of God to have fellowship with Him but became alienated in that relationship through willful disobedience. As a result, people are incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through their own efforts.

We believe that the gospel—faith alone in Jesus Christ alone based upon His sacrificial death on the cross, burial and resurrection–is the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin and gift of eternal life.  We believe that all Christians are to become like Christ by obeying the Word of God and yielding to the Spirit of God Who lives within them.  We believe that true freedom occurs when an individual not only achieves sobriety, but also follows God on a positive and purposeful path—where the lure to relapse is fading.
